Kitchen Assistant (Outdoor Education Center)

HOURS: 32/week
POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Kitchen Assistant supports the Kitchen Manager in maintaining the high quality and level of service the Outdoor Education Center’s food service is known for. We share the values of being inclusive, learning together, and communicating well in order to work together effectively. The Kitchen Assistant will work under the guidance of the Kitchen Manager with a range of responsibilities from food preparation and service, cleaning and other general kitchen requirements, maintaining food safety standards, and must be comfortable working in a kid-friendly environment.
- Ensure safe and efficient preparation and serving of camp meals in accordance with local and state regulations.
- Accommodate dietary needs of students, teachers, and staff.
- Maintain service quality and timeliness.
- Maintain organization in dining facilities, in food, and in equipment storage.
- Order food and supplies consistent with menus and enrollment counts.
- Maintain a written or digital inventory of food and food preparation supplies, for meals, intern snacks, and educational resources.
- Keep foods date marked and dispose of food that is spoiled, unusable, and/or out of date.
- Clean the food prep area, and consolidate leftovers at the conclusion of meals.
- Clean items used in food preparation when kitchen staff is not present.
- Maintain all food-service areas to high standards of cleanliness, sanitation, and safety, including kitchen, storage, freezers, and refrigerator units.
- Assists with Outdoor Education Center weekly housekeeping responsibilities
- Maintains positive and professional interactions with clients, campers, interns, vendors, and visitors
- Additional responsibilities, as required
- While this is a full-time, 32 hours/week position, workday hours can vary.
- This position is scheduled primarily for the second shift (10:30am-7:00pm).
- Minimum-18 years of age. Must be patient, flexible and able to react well under pressure.
- Good communication skills; friendly and personable.
- Cooking experience in institutional or large food service settings, including vegetarian and vegan meals.
- Ability to use kitchen equipment safely and properly.
- Demonstrate a respect and affinity for children. Able to work independently and with others.
- Possess strong computer skills with ability to fluently use Microsoft Office products and Google Suite.
- Demonstrated understanding of and willingness to move towards sustainable food service when possible.
- Must complete and pass a BCI/FBI background check.
- Valid driver’s license
- BCI/FBI background check required
- ServSafe Food Manager (to be provided, if needed)
- First Aid/CPR/AED certified (to be provided)
- Physical mobility and ability to lift and carry 50 lbs and stand for long durations.

Volunteer & Visitor Services Coordinator

ORGANIZATION AND POSITION SUMMARY:
Glen Helen is a living memorial to Helen Birch Bartlett, donated by her father, so that it would be forever preserved. Glen Helen has long played a lead role in shaping the ecological literacy of our visitors, our community, and the region. It is home to the first overnight environmental learning facility in the Midwest and Ohio’s original facility for education and rehabilitation of birds of prey. Within our borders, we shelter a National Natural Landmark and nearly two miles of the State and National Scenic Little Miami River. As a private nature preserve, Glen Helen depends on the support of individuals to maintain the preserve and its varied programs. It has been owned and operated by the Glen Helen Association since 2020.
The Volunteer & Visitor Services Coordinator is responsible for providing a positive, inclusive volunteer and visitor experience at Glen Helen. The Coordinator organizes our volunteer-driven efforts, Nature Shop management, and visitor services, especially on the weekends. This is a full-time position with weekend responsibilities. The regular schedule for this position is Wednesday-Sunday, with up to 2 Sundays off per month.

Intern Training Opportunities
Raptor Center Trainee
Position Reports To: Glen Helen Association Raptor Center Director
Location: Yellow Springs, Ohio
Start Date: mid-August
End Date: 6-month minimum commitment
Schedule: Full time
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Raptor Center trainees are valuable members of the educational and rehabilitation programs. Throughout this six or 12-month program, trainees gain hands-on education and extensive experience in captive raptor care and management, rehabilitation, education both at the center and in the community, training and enrichment. Trainees are mentored by two full-time and one half-time permanent staff members and our offsite veterinarian and have access to a variety of job shadowing opportunities in many wildlife related careers. This training program is best suited for individuals who have a developed interest in wildlife care and wellbeing, wildlife rehabilitation and wildlife education. Prior experience or specific education is not required, however a real world understanding of working with animals and wildlife is highly desirable.
Outdoor Education Center - Naturalist Teacher Intern

POSITION SUMMARY:
Naturalist Interns teach elementary students about the natural sciences during multi-day overnight programs. Students are provided with experience-based connections to nature while cultivating community and personal growth. Our curriculum is aligned with Ohio Education Standards and taught on the trails of Glen Helen Nature Preserve. Naturalist Interns have the freedom to develop lesson plans to support their individual teaching style and passions.
We are committed to fostering lifelong learning at the Glen Helen Outdoor Education Center, therefore ongoing training, professional development, and mentorship are provided. This internship provides real-world experience in preparation for employment as a naturalist, educator, or science communicator of any kind. Interns are provided housing amidst the beautiful 1,000 acre Glen Helen Nature Preserve, which is within walking distance of the vibrant Village of Yellow Springs.

Outdoor Education Center - Eco-Camp Counselor

POSITION SUMMARY:
Join our team of Eco-Camp Counselors for a fun and engaging community, interested in making a difference in the lives of children. Glen Helen Eco-Camp consists of week-long summer camps for children ages 5 to 15 years old. Each week, Eco-Camp Counselors are assigned up to 12 campers and are responsible for organizing and leading activities aligning with the camp theme. More information about our camp offering can be found here. Eco-Camp Counselors have full access to our staff support, facilities, and 1,000-acre nature preserve to develop camps they feel passionate about. This summer position will strengthen the Counselor’s ability to plan, teach, and lead others. Staff live on-site, within walking distance of the vibrant and artistic Village of Yellow Springs.
