“All flourishing is mutual”, author Kimmerer begins The Serviceberry. She then leads readers through a poetic, joyful path to the native berry patch and the idea of a gift economy. Kimmerer tells us “the serviceberry shows us another model, one based on reciprocity, where wealth comes from the quality of your relationships, not from the illusions of self-sufficiency.” A lighthearted read interwoven with themes of hope and generosity, defines gifts, whether a basket of juicy serviceberries or physical items, as a part of a moving, reciprocal economy able to bring joy and worthy of our attention.
