Land Stewardship at Glen Helen
Our commitment to land stewardship is rooted in a deep respect for the natural world and a dedication to safeguarding the ecological, historical, and geological resources within our boundaries. Through a range of initiatives, we strive to maintain and enhance the natural beauty and biodiversity of Glen Helen, ensuring it remains a vibrant and thriving habitat for future generations.
Our Philosophy:
At Glen Helen, our land stewardship philosophy revolves around protecting and preserving the unique ecological, historical, and geological features of the preserve. This includes:
- Ecological Stewardship:
We actively work to remove non-native invasive species and monitor for new threats to our ecosystem. Our efforts extend to propagating native plants and trees to aid in forest regeneration. - Historical and Geological Conservation:
We maintain and protect both the natural and man-made features of the preserve, ensuring that the historical and geological integrity of Glen Helen is preserved for educational and recreational purposes.
Bridge and Boardwalk Replacement:
Thanks to Clean Ohio Grants and the tireless efforts of our staff and volunteers, we are in the process of replacing the majority of bridges and boardwalks within the preserve. These improvements are designed to create durable, long-lasting structures that enhance trail safety and enjoyment while protecting the delicate plant life and waterways.
Sutton Farm Restoration:
A significant land restoration project is underway at Sutton Farm, where approximately 20 acres of conventional agricultural land are being converted back to forest. This involves:
- Removing subsurface drainage tiles to restore natural soil moisture.
- Encouraging the natural recruitment of tree species from surrounding forests.
- Installing deer exclusion fences to protect native tree species.
- Removing 10 acres of woody invasive species.
Invasive Species Management
Community Engagement
Engaging with the local community is a cornerstone of our land stewardship efforts. We offer various programs to involve residents and organizations in conservation activities:
- Volunteer Opportunities: Community members can gain hands-on experience in managing invasive species and maintaining trails.
- Native Plant Sales: These sales provide local residents with the opportunity to purchase plants that are well-suited to the local ecology.
- Interpretive Walks: Educational walks highlight local ecology and teach participants to identify native plants and animals in their surroundings.
Stewardship Goals and Plans
Our land management plan aims to:
- Preserve and enhance aquatic habitats in the Little Miami River, Yellow Springs Creek, and Birch Creek.
- Improve the quality of native hardwood forests and herbaceous understories.
- Support diverse native bird and wildlife populations, including rare and endangered species.
- Protect cultural and historical sites like Grinnell Mill and Orator’s Mound.
- Foster environmental learning programs and events.
Unique Features and Notable Ecology
Glen Helen is home to remarkable geological features, including Pompey’s Pillar and the Yellow Spring, a significant iron-rich water source, for which the local town of Yellow Springs is named.
In addition, we steward 2.5 stunning miles of the National Scenic Little Miami River within our Preserve.
The preserve also boasts:
- Flora: Over 340 species of wildflowers, including rare species such as Squirrel Corn and Cardinal Flower.
- Fauna: A rich array of wildlife, with more than 200 bird species and exceptional macroinvertebrate and fish communities.
Combatting Invasive Species
Since 2000, we have been aggressively removing invasive species to protect the sensitive areas of the Glen. Despite ongoing challenges, our efforts have prevented these species from establishing a strong foothold in the preserve's most vulnerable areas.
